  Raising Children

The job of raising children is a tough one. Children don't come with an instructionmanual. And each child is different. So parents sometimes pull their hair out in frustration, notknowing what to do. But in raising children-as in all of life-what we do is influenced by ourculture. Naturally then, American parents teach their children basic American values.

To Americans, the goal of parents is to help children stand on their own two feet. Frominfancy, each child may get his or her own room. As children grow, they gain more freedom tomake their own choices. Teenagers choose their own forms of entertainment, as well as thefriends to share them with. When they reach young adulthood, they choose their own careersand marriage partners. Of course, many young adults still seek their parents' advice andapproval for the choices they make. But once they "leave the nest" at around 18 to 21 yearsold, they want to be on their own, not "tied to their mother's apron strings."

The relationship between parents and children in America is very informal. Americanparents try to treat their children as individuals-not as extensions of themselves. They allowthem to fulfill their own dreams. Americans praise and encourage their children to give themthe confidence to succeed. When children become adults, their relationship with their parentsbecomes more like a friendship among equals. But contrary to popular belief, most adultAmericans don't make their parents pay for room and board when they come to visit. Even asadults, they respect and honor their parents.

Most young couples with children struggle with the issue of childcare. Mothers havetraditionally stayed home with their children. In recent years, though, a growing trend is to putpreschoolers in a day care center so Mom can work. Many Americans have strong feelings aboutwhich type of arrangement is best. Some argue that attending a day care center can be apositive experience for children. Others insist that mothers are the best caregivers for children.A number of women are now leaving the work force to become full-time homemakers.

Disciplining children is another area that American parents have differing opinions about. Many parents feel that an old-fashioned spanking helps youngsters learn what "No!" means.Others prefer alternate forms of discipline. For example, "time outs" have become popular inrecent years. Children in "time out" have to sit in a corner or by a wall. They can get up onlywhen they are ready to act nicely. Older children and teenagers who break the rules may begrounded, or not allowed to go out with friends. Some of their privileges at home-like TV ortelephone use-may also be taken away for a while. Although discipline isn't fun for parents orchildren, it's a necessary part of training.

Being a parent is a tall order. It takes patience, love, wisdom, courage and a good sense ofhumor to raise children (and not lose your sanity). Some people are just deciding not to havechildren at all, since they're not sure it's worth it. But raising children means training the nextgeneration and preserving our culture. What could be worth more than that?

On job interviews when first conversing with an individual and when addressing small or

large groups, the first few seconds are critical in setting the tone for how you'll be perceived. If she has an annoying regional accent, uses incorrect grammar, has a limited vocabulary, and if she has an irritatingly sharp piercing voice, sounds whiny or bossy or doesn't articulate her words clearly, it' s an immediate turn-off. This isn't someone who you would hire or proudly introduce to your friends and business associates. This doesn't mean that everyone should try to sound like a professional actor or broadcaster. All of us have qualities unique to our own way of speaking, our individual voiceprint

as distinctive as our fingerprints. Our voice is very personal and an important part of our identity. Some natural characteristics of our voice may be very appealing.

The idea is to take the voice with which you've been gifted and give it the very best sound that you can. With the right type of practice, by paying attention to the quality of your voice and by knowing how to properly express yourself, you' II almost immediately improve your opportunities in job interviews, social situations, in selling, and in running a meeting or addressing groups of people.

Let' s say it again, it all begins with the instrument, your voice. If its sound and quality is flawed and needs improvement, that' s where you start. That' s what everyone hears whether in casual conversation or in making a major speech to a large audience. Pure vowel sounds, articulation, proper breathing, expressive speaking patterns, a pleasing vocal range, naturalness, all these will make you get twice the result with half the effort.

america is growing older. fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the united states were 65 or older. today, 10 out of every ]00 americans are over 65. the aging of the population will affect american society in many ways - education, medicine, and business. the graying of america has made us a very different society ---one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior is suitable at various ages.

a persons age no longer tells you anything about his or her social position, marriage or health. theres no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. the social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isnt as strong as it used to be. it doesnt surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year- old grandmother,or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. public ideas are changing.

many people say,"l am much younger than my mother or my father was at my age." no one says anymore," act your age." weve stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.

the ways of history are so intricate and the motivations of human actions so complex that it is always hazardous to attempt to represent events covering a number of years, a multiplicity of persons, and distant localities as the expression of one intellectual or social movement; yet the historical process which culminated in the ascent of thomas jefferson to the presidency can be regarded as the outstanding example not only of the birth of a new way of life but of nationalism as a new way of life.

the american revolution represents the link between the seventeenth century, in which modern england became conscious of itself, and the awakening of modern europe at the end of the eighteenth century. it may seem strange that the march of history should have had to cross the atlantic ocean, but only in the north american colonies could a struggle for civic liberty lead also to the foundation of a new nation.

here, in the popular rising against a "tyrannical" government, the fruits were more than the securing of a freer constitution. they included the growth of a nation born in liberty by the will of the people, not from the roots of common descent, a geographic entity, or the ambitions of king or dynasty.

with the american nation, for the first time, a nation was born, not in the dim past of history but before the eyes of the whole world.

This Thursday is Thanksgiving Day. The writer O’Henry called it the one day that is purely American. Thanksgiving is not a religious holiday. But it has ritual meaning. Some Americans attend religious services on the day before Thanksgiving or on Thanksgiving morning. Others travel long distances to be with their families. They have a large dinner which is the main part of the celebration. For many Americans, Thanksgiving is the only time when all members of the family gather.

The holiday is a time of family reunion. Thanksgiving week is generally one of the busiest travel times of the year. However, experts say this year probably will be different. On September 11th, thousands of people died when terrorists hijacked airplanes that struck buildings in Washington D.C. and New York City. Many people now say they are worried about flying on a plane.

Travel experts say almost 6 percent fewer people will make long trips this Thanksgiving compared with last year. Many Americans who usually visit family and friends by plane are driving shorter distances instead this week. Some mental health experts say the attacks have frightened people. They say people feel safer and happier close to home. More than any other holiday, Thanksgiving is a celebration of family and home. Many people say that this year they are especially thankful for their families and friends and the good things in their lives. On Thanksgiving, people enjoy a long day of cooking, eating and talking.

The traditional meal almost always includes the turkey with a bread mixture cooked inside. Other traditional Thanksgiving food served with turkey are sweet potatoes, cranberries and pumpkin pie. Stores are said to sell more food at Thanksgiving than at any other time of the year, and many people eat more food at Thanksgiving than at any other time of the year. Over the years, Americans have added new traditions to their Thanksgiving celebration. For example, a number off professional and university football games are played on Thanksgiving Day. Some of the games are broadcast on national television.

The understanding of American culture must not end with what we know on TV, because she has the most distinctive features of her own, which is diversity. As a country with a large immigrant population, the United States does not have a unique way of life, there is no only standard of conduct, and there is no unique culture. The diversity of the United States penetration in all aspects of the country, the following guidelines may not be able to help you overcome all from the cultural differences, but hope to everyone to prepare for the basic study in the United States and general plan to help.

Americans have a very different lifestyle than Chinese people. American food is light and easy to make, and the main course is meat, fish and chicken. A meal usually consists of only one main course, and salads and coffee are by no means less. Hot dogs and hamburgers are two of the most popular fast foods.

Americans are so active that more than a fifth of them move every year. The most detailed list of houses and apartments available on Sunday in newspapers across the country can be used to find homes or to find local estate agents. In addition to paying for rent, the rent house generally pays for utilities, namely gas, electricity, heating, hot water and simple electrical repairs and other repairs. The rent is usually a month, usually on the first day of the month. Electricity in most parts of the United States is 110-120 volts, 60Hz.

Almost every home in the United States has a car, and the American highway is very developed and accessible, so many americans work very far from where they live. They often go on a family trip during the holidays. The most popular means of transportation in the city are buses and subways. The subway is usually run day and night. Taxis are usually paid by distance or by distance. The whole country executes the right driving, the big city executes traffic regulation especially strict.

  The American concept of time

Because of the fierce competition, the American society is full of movement and change, people are always in a hurry, and the result also has formed the americans' time view of tension. "Time is money" is the most accurate expression of the American attitude to time. Americans value time more than just because they think time is a tangible thing, but more importantly they recognize the urgency and lack of time. Americans believe that the question of time can fully reflect a person's self-cultivation, and his respect for others. Therefore, it is necessary to have a detailed schedule and strict adherence to it.

So we stress that being on time is not just about the individual's schedule, but if you're not on time, it reflects your lack of respect for others' time. In the study of life, apart from being on time, it is necessary to observe the deadline of various learning tasks. American schools generally teach students a subject, and then a group of students form a study group. Everyone is responsible for different aspects of learning team, if you don't have the prescribed deadline to complete you responsible for that part, influence is the whole team's performance, it is also a lot of American students constantly complaining about a problem. So being on time is a basic requirement for studying and living in the United States.

  The way americans communicate

Talking to people is the most basic form of interpersonal communication. When you're talking to friends from all over the world, you're not just talking to each other, you're communicating with each other. The way language is expressed can often reflect the characteristics of a particular region or country.

  Direct refreshing

Most of the time, conversations in the United States belong to a tendency to get information. They like to ask a lot of questions, and in a very direct way. They will use the most simple and direct language to get the information they want, the process, if they do not pay too much attention to wording beautiful, whether express tactfully, it sometimes inevitably conceded the interlocutors have a feeling not too polite. Answer this question, too, when the answer is no, americans will tell you "no" directly, also won't go to touch up for his answer, and if you don't have to know in advance to their speech habits, it felt embarrassed is inevitable.

  Positive questions

Another obvious feature of the American way of communication is that there is no hesitation in asking questions. In the course of conversation, if americans don't understand what they don't understand, they often ask each other questions in a timely manner until they understand it. This feature is encouraged in class. In American classrooms, students can present any questions to the classroom at any time, and the lecturers will be more than happy to answer questions for students. Therefore, American classroom will always make students absorb knowledge in a relaxed, interactive and positive atmosphere.

   body language

The tools of human communication are not just words, but body language. Spoke of the gestures, body posture, and facial expressions are the key to proper use of body language, we will divide the occasion, object, subject of flexible adjustment and use body language. Eye contact is the key of the above elements. Keep your eyes on the other side of the conversation while you're talking. This is something americans value too much.

Here are a few topics that can be used to talk to almost all americans:

  Weather and mood

  Some of my past experiences

My own campus life, or work content

Car, fashion, shopping, TV, music, clothing and other casual topics

At the same time, we should avoid the following topics:

Savings, income and other topics related to the personal economic situation

  Family situation

  Religious beliefs and so on

The last thing to note is that when you don't have a good grasp of your sense of humor, it's best not to play it at will. You know, different countries, different culture, have different understanding of humor, and the appropriate humor can active conversation atmosphere, it is easy to cause unnecessary misunderstanding, or conversely.

Were divided into 50 states, each state has different administrative rules and regulations, combined with geographical location, climate condition difference, leads to the residents of the states have different living habits. The same is true of America's diversity.

Climate change is a top priority. On the other hand is psychological preparation. Residents in different regions have different characteristics, such as: the east people look is always in a hurry, rush about for work, but with their southern leisurely, quiet and warm hospitality is famous for its character, the residents of the Midwest's character can be described as practical, stubborn, and tradition, the western residents seem to be more independent, attach importance to individualism, live along the west coast of the United States people impressed us is recreational, relaxed and optional. You're going to be on a trip to the United States, and you're going to have to look at the cities where you're going to school, and you're going to have a general idea of what you're going to do in these areas.

Different social attitudes: The british are, in some ways, less conservative than Americans - the drinking age is 18, not 21, homosexual civil unions are legal, and abortion hasn't been a serious political issue in years. Mixing religion and politics is extremely rare in the UK. On the other hand, there are stricter controls on some things - it's much harder to get a driving licence, and the age requirement is higher than in most states, there are speed cameras everwhere, CCTV cameras in many public places (although they may or may not be working), and carrying weapons or other objects for "self defence" is illegal (in particular, note that pepper spray is illegal).

Getting into a debate about the right to bear arms will be very time consuming, and may also lead people to think that you're a gun-nut before they've got to know you properly.

Smoking in enclosed public places is illegal - that includes pubs, the underground, train stations... more or less any non-residential building actually... (similar to New York, so not so much of a cultural difference there).

The United States of America, also known as the United States, the U.S., the U.S.A., and America, is a country in North America that shares land borders with Canada and Mexico, and a sea border with Russia. Extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, the United States is a federal republic, with its capital in Washington, D.C.

The present-day continental United States has been inhabited for at least 15,000 years by indigenous tribes. After European exploration and settlement in the 16th century, the English established their own colonies—and gained control of others that had been begun by other European nations—in the eastern portion of the continent in the 17th and early 18th centuries. On 4 July 1776, at war with Britain over fair governance, thirteen of these colonies declared their independence. In 1783, the war ended in British acceptance of the new nation. Since then, the country has more than quadrupled in size: it now consists of 50 states and one federal district; it also has numerous overseas territories.

At over 3.7 million square miles (over 9.5 million km), the U.S. is the third or fourth largest country by total area, depending on whether the disputed areas of China are included. It is the world's third most populous nation, with nearly 300 million people.

The United States has maintained a liberal democratic political system since it adopted its Articles of Confederation on 1 March 1781 and the Constitution, the Articles' replacement, on 17 September 1787. American military, economic, cultural, and political influence increased throughout the 20th century; with the collapse of the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War, the nation emerged as the world's sole remaining superpower. Today, it plays a major role in world affairs.

The earliest known use of the name America is from 1507, when a globe and a large map created by the German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller in Saint-Die-des-Vosges described the combined continents of North and South America. Although the origin of the name is uncertain, the most widely held belief is that expressed in an accompanying book, Cosmographiae Introductio, which explains it as a feminized version of the Latin name of Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci (Americus Vespucius); in Latin, the other continents' names were all feminine. Vespucci theorized, correctly, that Christopher Columbus, on reaching islands in the Caribbean Sea in 1492, had come not to India but to a "New World".

The Americas were also known as Columbia, after Columbus, prompting the name District of Columbia for the land set aside as the U.S. capital. Columbia remained a popular name for the United States until the early 20th century, when it fell into relative disuse; but it is still used poetically and appears in various names and titles. A female personification of the country is also called Columbia; she is similar to Britannia. Columbus Day, a holiday in the U.S. and other countries in the Americas commemorating Columbus' October 1492 landing.

The term "united States of America" was first used officially in the Declaration of Independence, adopted on 4 July 1776. On 15 November 1777, the Second Continental Congreadopted the Articles of Confederation, the first of which stated "The Stile of this Confederacy shall be 'The United States of America.'"

The adjectival and demonymic forms for the United States are American, a point of controversy among some.

Class begins.”

Today grandma accompanies me to study, grandma is reading the newspaper. Grandma said that the President of the United States came to China and spoke to the young people of Shanghai. I think China and America must be good friends. When I grow up, I will travel to America.

  American travel composition English 4

We arrived in New York on a scorching afternoon. Fresh out of the airport, I felt a hot air coming, and we took off our coats and let sweat and freedom flow...

An hour later, we arrived at the hotel, lowered the luggage, and went to sleep.

As soon as I got to sleep, my parents called me up and got into the car and headed for the port. We went to the statue of liberty, about half an hour's boat, and heard someone Shouting excitedly: "see! I see it!" A solemn statue stood on a small island by the sea. The name of the island is liberty island.

The statue of liberty, which is about 93 meters high, has a statue of liberty in its head and a free torch about ten meters high. It was a gift from France to the United States for the centenary. It symbolizes the freedom of the American people. Her eyes looked straight ahead, solemn and kind.

The next day, we got up early and drove our rental car to the Wall Street copper bull. When I got to the copper cow, I waited and waited, so it was not easy for me to have time. I rushed in, and dad took the camera and snapped a lot of photos. After watching the Wall Street bull, we went straight to Wall Street. I look forward to going to Wall Street, because my dream is to be the richest person in the world. On the way to Wall Street, my heart would jump out excitedly, my father pretended to shake his head, and then said sadly, "it's very kind of money worship!"

Wall Street is a street with some very old buildings. Go straight and you'll see a stock exchange. It had an American flag on it. It was beautiful.

Back at the hotel, we brushed our teeth and climbed into bed, and we fell asleep. My mother called me up in the morning and went to the metropolitan museum without a good brush.

The metropolitan museum doesn't seem like a building. It's like a sculptor. The carved objects are magnified. The first floor is the Egyptian pavilion, where many of the stones are kept well, and some are covered with earth, which is thought to have been dug out. It's not easy to see the Egyptian pavilion. We can't wait to get up to the second floor. Do you know why? Because it's a Chinese pavilion! On the last step, we are too tired to asthma hush, I turned around, we will shine at the moment immediately strength increase ran past, that is a plate, embroidered full of beautiful decorative pattern, look closely, is a dragon and a phoenix coiled on a plate. Everyone stared at it, looking forward, looking down. After about an hour, we finished the Chinese pavilion, not without admiration. Among them, one of my favorite items is a piece of square, carved with a giant Buddha inside and outside are all small Buddha, surprised to see that item, thought, thought how good his own age, ancient also as good as yourself!

The time passed quickly, and suddenly it was dark, and everyone was reluctant to leave the met. It seemed like a long time ago, I woke up, looked at my watch, did not know, a look of surprise! It's nine o 'clock! I quickly woke my father and mother, and my father and mother laughed and told me, "we can get up late today, so don't worry." After half an hour, everyone had a leisurely breakfast and embarked on a trip to Boston.
